Kayak beginner course

About the beginners' course

A day of training for the yellow paddle pass. You will learn the basics of maneuvering your kayak. We meet at 09:00 at Kanotkungen in Åkers Styckebruk. We finish around 16:00. At the end of the day you can get the certification for the yellow paddle pass.

Dates: June 13, July 17, July 18, August 2, and August 3

During this course you will learn:

Theory is interspersed with practical exercises and reflections. Here are some examples of the course content.

  • Lifting, carrying, getting in and out of the kayak
  • Effective technology for paddling forward
  • Paddling backwards
  • Stop the kayak
  • Swinging with sweeping strokes
  • Behavior in nature in Sweden
  • Self-rescue
  • Cold water knowledge

Price: 2150 kr

Requirements: You must be able to swim 200 meters.

What is included in the course:

  • Kayak, paddle, lifejacket, snowmobile cover
  • Waterproof bag

What you need to take with you:

  • A bottle of water
  • A complete change of clothes and towel 
  • Lunch and coffee
  • Hat
  • Sunglasses
  • Gloves that can get wet
  • Shoes that can get wet
  • Comfortable pants (tights or shorts)
  • A jacket for wind protection and warm clothes depending on the weather
  • Paper and pencil

A minimum of 2 participants is required for the course to take place.

About the instructor

Francois Herrault will be your instructor. Francois is an experienced instructor and guide, trained and certified by the Swedish Canoe Federation. Francois has experience in teaching beginners the basics of sea kayaking as well as coaching advanced paddlers in challenging environments.

  • 12 years of paddling in the Stockholm archipelago
  • 8 years of leading groups and teaching kayaking at all levels
  • Certified as a kayak leader level 1 and 2 with the Swedish Canoe Federation
  • Certified as a kayak leader level 1 and 2 with the major Swedish outdoor organization: Friluftsfrämjandet
  • Owners of the red European Paddle Pass
  • Teaches and examines paddlers at yellow, green and blue levels

GSRT - Training

GSRT - Basic safety and rescue techniques

This training is aimed at, for example, physical education teachers, recreational educators and association leaders responsible for paddling activities with young people. The aim is to provide participants with basic theoretical and practical knowledge to manage the safety of paddling in protected waters, up to so-called green conditions.

The training is cross-disciplinary and covers both kayaks and canoes. Participants will have the opportunity to try and carry out practical exercises in several different types of canoes, which provides a broad and useful competence for varied activities with youth groups in focus.

Price: 6 participants, 2200 SEK / person.
